POSIX Threads and Multi-Threaded Concurrency
Harness multi-core CPU hardware using POSIX threads, eliminate race conditions with mutexes and condition variables, navigate memory consistency models, and build robust thread pools.
Unlike multi-process architectures that isolate execution within independent virtual address spaces, multi-threaded programs execute concurrently within a single shared address space. This module explores how modern operating systems schedule threads of execution, how hardware cache coherency mediates shared memory access, and how to synchronize parallel execution paths using POSIX thread (pthread) primitives. Mastering these concurrency patterns allows you to build high-performance multi-threaded servers, compute pipelines, and responsive systems software without data races or deadlocks.
